Atlantis commuters to benefit from MyCiTi bus refurbishments and new stops
04 September 2026
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas recently went out to see the progress of the refurbishment of one of the buses serving the Atlantis route as well as the bus stops currently being installed in Atlantis and surrounding areas
Everyday thousands of Atlantis residents rely on MyCiTi to access their work, education, healthcare and other opportunities across Cape Town. To support this demand, the City is actively rolling out a focused programme of bus refurbishments and infrastructure upgrades to improve reliability and the overall passenger experience.
There is extensive work happening behind the scenes to keep the City’s 346 MyCiTi buses safe, reliable and on the road. On the Atlantis routes alone, buses collectively travel around 4 200 kilometres every weekday, contributing to a network that carries approximately 65 000 passengers daily.
Depending on the condition of the buses, full refurbishments take between seven and 14 weeks and ensure buses return to service safe, reliable and fit for purpose.

The
City acknowledges recent service pressures and appreciates commuters’ patience
as this work is rolled out.
‘We are making steady progress to strengthen the reliability of the MyCiTi service for Atlantis, Witsand, Pella, and Mamre commuters. We understand that the recent service pressures have been frustrating, and we appreciate your patience while this work is rolled out. I also appeal to residents to help us tackle the stoning and vandalism of our buses, which not only pose a direct threat to the safety of passengers and drivers, but mean that maintenance and repair times are further extended, directly impacting service availability. When buses are damaged, the entire community is affected. Please report any vandalism to 0800 65 64 63.’
In addition, we are finalising the upgrade of 45 temporary MyCiTi stops to new permanent stops along the Atlantis, Pella and Mamre routes. These newly installed stops will now provide commuters with modern, permanent shelters.

‘During
my recent visit to Atlantis, I was able to see some of the newly installed bus
stops along our routes, where the team is currently busy with the finishing
touches of the new bus stop infrastructure. These new stops are a significant
improvement for our passengers, providing safer, more comfortable waiting
areas. We’ve also upgraded the surrounding pedestrian infrastructure to make
access easier and safer. It’s about getting the basics right and delivering
dignified public transport for the communities we serve, another important part
of how we keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for
Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
