City flags weekend pedestrian accident rates

The City’s enforcement agencies made 381 arrests in the past week, and issued 77 955 fines during weekly enforcement patrols. The Public Emergency Communication Centre ( PECC) recorded 3 159 calls for assistance over the past weekend, including 40 accidents involving pedestrians.
Emergency call takers fielded 3 159 calls for assistance this past weekend.
These included 17 weather-related calls due to the damaging wind that persisted for large parts of the weekend, compared to just one such call the weekend prior; 178 physical assault related incidents, 77 domestic violence cases, 107 motor vehicle accidents and 40 involving pedestrians.
‘These statistics are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge that is road safety, and pedestrian safety in particular. Our enforcement staff conduct pedestrian awareness sessions on a daily basis, and we even issue fines where pedestrians are found in contravention of the relevant legislation. But ultimately, it is a shared responsibility and one where road users have to be mindful of their actions and the impact it has on those around them,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
On the enforcement front, Metro Police officers recovered eight hijacked/stolen vehicles during weekly patrols.
On Sunday, 6 September 2026 officers also recovered a stolen trailer and boat in Hout Bay and arrested a suspect after swiftly following up on information received.
Officers issued 4 268 traffic related fines, 737 by-law notices and arrested 96 suspects. Of those arrested, 63 were for the illegal possession of drugs.
Law Enforcement colleagues arrested 211 suspects and issued 11 513 notices for various transgressions during weekly patrols.
On the roads, Traffic Officers arrested 74 suspects – 65 for drunk driving, four for reckless and negligent driving and five on other charges. They executed 2 152 warrants, impounded 110 public transport vehicles and issued 61 437 fines.
