City on track with congestion relief project in Diep River

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate is making good progress with the congestion relief project at the intersection of De Waal, Kendal and Main Roads in Diep River. The project commenced in July this year and is scheduled for completion in August 2027. The excavation along Kendal Road has been completed and the next stage of preparing the road for construction is now under way. Telecommunication services are being relocated, while tree removals have been completed. Service ducts and mole barriers have also been installed along Main Road. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, together with project managers and senior officials, visited the site today, 25 August 2026.

‘This project is about reducing congestion, improving traffic flow and making this important Southern Suburbs junction work better for everyone. These road improvements will continue until August 2027, if all goes as planned, and we would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while we continue working to keep Cape Town moving,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas.

De Waal and Kendal Roads currently function as single carriageways, linking the M3, Main Road (M4) and Prince George Drive (M5). The long-term plan involves extending these roads to connect with the R300.

Work is being carried out from Mondays to Thursdays between 07:30 and 17:30, Fridays between 07:30 and 14:30 and Saturdays between 07:30 and 14:00.

‘We are currently focused on widening Kendal Road, which will be followed by the widening of Main Road and then De Waal Road. Once completed, Kendal Road will have an additional lane, including a new bus lane. Main Road will also be widened, while De Waal Road will be expanded to four lanes,’ added Councillor Quintas.

The City acknowledges that construction work over the next 12 months may cause some inconvenience to residents and road users. The City apologises for this and thanks the community for its patience, understanding and cooperation as this important project progresses. Once complete, the upgrades will improve traffic flow, increase road capacity and help ease congestion at this busy Southern Suburbs intersection.
