Eagle-eyed CCTV operator stars in illegal firearm bust

The City’s enforcement agencies made 469 arrests in the past week, and issued 72 842 fines during weekly enforcement patrols. In one of the latest incidents in the early hours of this morning, a CCTV detection led ground forces to a suspect in possession of an illegal firearm in Langa.

The CCTV operator spotted a suspect carrying a firearm in Washington Drive just after 01:00.

The suspect went inside a premises in the area, and emerged a short while later, where he handed off the firearm to a second man.

Law Enforcement and SAPS officers responded to the alert, and were guided to the suspect by the CCTV operator. SAPS officers took a 21-year-old man into custody for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

‘We’ve had numerous examples in recent weeks of how technology boosts the fight against crime. This latest incident simply reiterates that point very clearly. Even more encouraging is the manner in which inter-agency collaboration is growing between our enforcement services and SAPS and what is possible when we work together,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

In general enforcement in the past week, Metro Police officers made 145 arrests – 54 for driving under the influence. They issued 5 145 fines, recovered five hijacked/stolen vehicles, various quantities of drugs, two firearms and 36 rounds of ammunition.

Their Law Enforcement colleagues arrested 267 suspects and issued 15 160 notices for various transgressions during weekly patrols.

On the roads, Traffic Officers arrested 57 suspects – 46 for drunk driving, six for reckless and negligent driving and five on other charges. They executed 1 054 warrants, impounded 174 public transport vehicles and issued 52 537 fines.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre received 2 736 calls for assistance this past weekend.

These included 124 physical assault related incidents, 52 domestic violence cases, 64 motor vehicle accidents and 23 involving pedestrians.
