Energy upgrades completed in Southfield and Cafda Village

The City’s Energy Directorate recently completed electricity infrastructure upgrades by installing a new substation in Cafda Village, while new streetlight infrastructure was installed in Southfield. The City’s Energy Directorate is committed to its infrastructure investment programme across the metro.
‘The City continues to make significant investments in electricity infrastructure to ensure a reliable and resilient energy network for residents. In Cafda Village, our teams recently completed the installation of a new 500kVA ground-mounted mini-substation at a cost of R700 000. This latest critical infrastructure upgrade includes modern gas-insulated ring main units, replacing ageing oil-based equipment and enhancing the electricity network. In addition to the minisub replacements, 67 low-voltage supply kiosks will also be replaced.
‘This project forms part of the City’s commitment to service delivery, with more than R6 billion earmarked for electricity grid upgrades and clean energy procurement over the coming years. The successful completion of the Cafda Village upgrade also highlights the work of our operational teams, who have made exceptional progress with our asset replacement programme. Despite the financial year only recently commencing, our teams have already delivered 60% of their replacement targets, highlighting our proactive approach to sustaining service reliability through ongoing grid upgrades.
LED replacements and upgrades in Southfield
‘The City is also investing in modern streetlighting infrastructure across communities, with teams currently carrying out LED streetlight upgrades in Southfield. This work includes the installation of new poles and energy efficient LED luminaires. More than 50 streetlights were retrofitted in a single week while routine maintenance work continues.
‘These upgrades form part of the City’s long-term, 25-year LED streetlight replacement programme, which prioritises major arterial routes during the initial phases before expanding into residential areas across Cape Town,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
