Jakes Gerwel Drive-major rehabilitation project complete

18 September 2026

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas went out to see the recently rehabilitated portion of Jakes Gerwel Road this week. This project was a significant undertaking along one of Cape Town’s busiest routes, and despite the challenges and delays experienced along the way, motorists now once again have full access to all lanes.

‘It’s great to finally have this section of Jakes Gerwel Drive, between Viking Way and Voortrekker Road, fully reopened following an extensive rehabilitation of this important arterial route. I want to sincerely thank every motorist and commuter for their patience and cooperation throughout this project. Investing in the rehabilitation of our roads is critical to extending the lifespan of our infrastructure, improving the journey for road users and, importantly, keeping Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The City started this major project in January last year, with work taking place on both the northbound and southbound carriageways, as well as the service roads and slip lanes. The work included rehabilitating the road pavement, replacing bridge joints, guardrails and road signs, upgrading concrete channels and reinstating manholes and other infrastructure.
