Motorists complying with new heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop on Kloof Nek Road

The City’s Transport Network Development team has reviewed AI camera footage of Kloof Nek Road captured by its Transport Network Technology Section. These statistics cover the period of July and August 2026 and provide an accurate indication of the efficacy of the new heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop.

‘Based on these combined statistics collected over the period 7 July 2026 to 31 Aug 2026, we are seeing a very high level of compliance. We now have 83% of heavy vehicles using the correct lane, of which only 3,5% failed to stop. If we consider all heavy traffic, then 79,5% complied with both the lane restriction and STOP control. This is a great start and with time, we can only expect this compliance rate to increase, improving the overall road safety along Kloof Nek Road. This intervention is one of the ways that we are keeping Cape Town moving safely,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. 

Furthermore, there were only 4,2% of other vehicle types encountered in the heavy vehicle lane.

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate currently awaits the final approval for the implementation of a permanent camera to enforce the compulsory stop.

‘I want to use this opportunity again to explain to road users that the righthand lane will accommodate general traffic, while the left hand lane will be reserved for heavy vehicles only, for approximately 250 metres. Heavy vehicle drivers are required to adhere to the STOP, engage low gear, and maintain low gear for the rest of the downhill section,’ said Quintas

A note to all drivers of normal light motor vehicles:

  • Drivers of normal light motor vehicles should merge into the right-hand lane ahead of the tapered lane markings and signage highlighting the commencement of the dedicated compulsory Heavy Vehicle (HV) lane.
  • If light motor vehicle drivers remain in the left lane in error, they will be compelled to stop at the STOP control, even though they are not driving a heavy vehicle.
