New sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety in Kenridge, Oude Westhof and Welgemoed

28 September 2026

The City of Cape Town is constructing new sidewalks in Kenridge, Oude Westhof and Welgemoed to make walking safer and more accessible for residents. Work starts today, Monday, 28 September 2026, and is expected to continue until Saturday, 31 October 2026, weather permitting.

The sidewalks will be constructed along:

  • Kenridge: Van Riebeeck Avenue, between Greenfields Street and De Bron Avenue.
  • Oude Westhof: Blanc de Noir Street, between Van Riebeeckshof Road and Cabernet Sauvignon Street.
  • Welgemoed: Murray Street, between Kommissaris Street and Plettenberg Street.

‘Safe, accessible sidewalks make it easier for residents to walk around their neighbourhoods. These improvements will create safer spaces for pedestrians and encourage more people to walk. We ask residents and road users to please be patient while construction is under way. Traffic delays are possible, so please slow down, follow the signs and consider alternative routes where possible. Together, we are making our neighbourhoods safer as we work to keep Cape Town moving,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Although work will take place alongside the roads, traffic in both directions may be affected. Work areas will be clearly marked, with measures in place to guide pedestrians safely around construction zones.

Work will take place from 07:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday, weather permitting and in the absence of unforeseen delays.
