Partnership clears 37,8 tonnes of waste from Soet River

With 21 clean-ups completed and 37,8 tonnes of waste removed from the Soet River, Oasis “Reach for your Dreams” is helping restore a polluted waterway through its partnership with the City, while creating opportunities for vulnerable residents.

Oasis “Reach for your Dreams” is one of the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate’s grant funding recipients, working to reduce pollution in the Soet River while strengthening community participation in protecting rivers and urban waterways.

Through the City’s grant funding programme, Oasis hosted 21 clean-ups along the chronically polluted Boundary Road stretch of the Soet River in Strand, removing 37,8 tonnes (37 800 kg) of waste and filling 1 260 refuse bags.

‘Every clean-up along the Soet River brings us one step closer to healthier waterways and cleaner neighbourhoods. Removing 37,8 tonnes of waste is a testament to what can be achieved when communities and the City work together. Beyond the environmental benefits, this partnership is also creating opportunities for vulnerable residents by providing skills, experience and a renewed sense of purpose. This is the kind of collaboration that delivers lasting benefits for both people and the environment,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

‘Oasis is all about community upliftment, whether it be through sport, reintegration or empowerment programmes. Our foremost priority is securing partnerships with various stakeholders in the communities in which we work. This clean-up project in partnership with the City of Cape Town and EDP has helped community members improve their current circumstances,’ said Clifford Martinus, founder of Oasis.
