Road upgrades under way to improve traffic flow, safety, and pedestrian access in Brackenfell

18 August 2026

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has commenced roadworks along sections of Brackenfell Boulevard, Stanley Road and Saul Street in Brackenfell. The roadworks are scheduled for completion on Friday, 18 September 2026, weather permitting and subject to any unforeseen delays. Construction is taking place between 07:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday. The upgrades will improve traffic flow and road capacity, enhance safety at the Stanley Road and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection, provide safer pedestrian facilities along Saul Street and improve stormwater drainage.

‘These upgrades will deliver important improvements for motorists, pedestrians and the broader Brackenfell community. The widening of Brackenfell Boulevard will increase road capacity and improve traffic flow, while the new traffic circle at the Stanley Road and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection will improve safety by reducing conflict points at this existing three-way intersection.

‘The project will also provide new pedestrian sidewalks along Saul Street, making it safer and easier for pedestrians to move through the area. Improvements to the stormwater system will further reduce the risk of flooding and improve the resilience of the road infrastructure,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The road upgrades include:

  • Brackenfell Boulevard: Widening of the road along the southern boundary of Brackenfell Boulevard, from the Stanley Road intersection westward
  • Stanley Road and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection: Construction of a new traffic circle at the existing three-way intersection
  • Saul Street: Construction of new pedestrian sidewalks along Saul Street, including at the Saul Street and Brackenfell Boulevard intersection
  • Stormwater infrastructure: Improvements to drainage infrastructure to help reduce the risk of road flooding

The construction programme has been planned in stages to minimise disruption and avoid simultaneous closures of inbound and outbound lanes.

On Brackenfell Boulevard, normal traffic flow will be maintained while work is ongoing to widen the road. The construction area will be clearly demarcated on the southern side of the road, with delineators and advance warning signage in place.

On Stanley Road, construction will take place in phases, with traffic accommodated via detour routes during the construction of the new traffic circle.

On Saul Street, lane restrictions will be managed using flagmen and a stop-go system where required.

‘While every effort will be made to minimise disruption, road users should expect some congestion, particularly during peak periods as we work hard to keep Cape Town moving. We encourage motorists to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and consider alternative routes where possible,’ added Councillor Quintas.

The road upgrades form part of the external civil infrastructure required to support the development of the new high school in Brackenfell under the Western Cape Education Department’s Rapid School Build Programme.

The City will continue to monitor traffic conditions and construction impacts throughout the project and will implement appropriate measures to maintain safe movement through the area.
