Sybrand Park and Hazendal receives electricity infrastructure upgrades

The City's Energy Directorate continues to invest in metro wide critical electricity infrastructure with recent focus areas including overhead electricity infrastructure maintenance and upgrades in Sybrand Park and the transition from overhead to underground infrastructure in Hazendal.

‘We recently completed site visits to Hazendal Park and Sybrand Park where we are undertaking upgrades to the electricity infrastructure in those respective communities. These projects form part of our commitment to service delivery in all communities across Cape Town, with more than R6 billion earmarked for electricity grid upgrades and clean energy procurement over the coming years.

‘Our R14 million Hazendal project is progressing steadily, with the installation of underground electrical networks and upgrades to substations and related infrastructure. Significantly, the project remains on track for successful completion.

Our teams are working diligently to complete the project with minimum disruption to residents. This investment will help protect our critical community infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supply in the area. We are expanding the use of underground and alternative cabling solutions because they have a lower resale value, making them less attractive as a theft deterrent. Investing in modern infrastructure supports our long-term goal of providing a more reliable electricity supply while reducing the costs associated with theft, vandalism, and maintenance.

Over R1,5m project to boost Sybrand Park electricity supply and curb theft.

‘In Sybrand Park, our overhead electricity infrastructure upgrades saw teams replace copper-based lines with Aerial Bundled Conductor (ABC) cables, which aids in reducing the risk of cable theft and improve the reliability of the electricity network. We are investing approximately R770 000 in the current financial year with an additional R800 000 planned in the following financial year, while further network protection and strengthening work will continue as part of our broader grid upgrade investment pipeline.

‘We thank both communities for their continued support while we complete the work in their areas and we look forward to seeing the projects completed on schedule,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
