Comment on the proposed decommissioning of traffic signals at Onverwacht Road and Michael Street intersection, Strand
15 July 2026
15 July - 15 August 2026
About
Project background
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate investigated the decommissioning of the traffic signals at the intersection of Onverwacht Road and Michael Street after numerous incidents of theft and vandalism at the site.
Various people have also informed us that local motorists blatantly disobey the traffic signals in the area and use all intersections as a yield control, regardless of whether there are traffic lights or not.
In addition, stolen or vandalised equipment continually needs to be replaced. Therefore, we recommend that the traffic signals be decommissioned and that the intersection changes to a four-way stop.
We invite you to submit your input and let us know which option you would prefer:
- Option 1: Decommissioning/removal of traffic signals at the intersection of Onverwacht Road and Michael Street and change to a four-way stop
- Option 2: No changes (remain as it is)
In terms of section 17 of the Local Government:In terms of Section 17 of the Loca Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments to the municipality in respect of the proposal.
