Housing the City delivers title deeds, services and repairs in Heideveld

The City of Cape Town’s Housing the City Tour: Bringing You Home headed to Heideveld, took housing services directly into the community, handed over 65 title deeds to homeowners and visited City rental flats where repairs and upgrades were under way.
‘The Housing the City initiative is about taking government and delivery directly to our residents. In Heideveld, that meant helping residents with housing applications and services, handing 65 families the title deeds to their homes and seeing first-hand the repair and maintenance work taking place in our Community Residential Units.
‘For the 65 residents who received their title deeds, this is much more than receiving a document. A title deed provides the security of knowing that the home you have lived in and cared for is legally yours. It gives families an asset that can be passed from one generation to the next and is an important part of restoring dignity through homeownership.
‘Our Human Settlements teams assisted residents with affordable housing applications, consumer education, rental housing matters and other housing-related services – all under one roof and in their own community. We also visited Community Residential Units where repair and upgrade work is under way. This includes the replacement of external doors, plumbing and carpentry repairs, roof and ceiling maintenance, as well as plastering and wall repairs.
‘Cape Town has a significant portfolio of ageing public housing infrastructure and there is much work still to be done. That is why the City is budgeting almost R1,2 billion over the next three financial years for the upgrade and maintenance of our Council flats. We are investing, repairing and progressively improving these homes, community by community.
‘Housing the City is therefore not simply a tour. It is about showing up, getting the work done and bringing delivery closer to residents. We will continue taking this initiative across Cape Town, listening to communities, resolving housing matters and ensuring residents can see and experience the work being done in their neighbourhoods. Thank you to the Heideveld community for engaging with us and to the City officials whose work made the day possible. We are bringing housing services closer to residents and, one community at a time, bringing Cape Town home,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
