New City App Smart Water feature puts water use in your hands

16 September 2026

Do you want to know how much water your property is using each day or spot unusual water consumption before it becomes a bigger concern? Customers with newly installed Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart water meters, can now track their water consumption directly on the City’s app.

The new Smart Water feature is now live on the City’s App, giving customers greater visibility of their water use, allowing them to track daily, weekly and monthly consumption, monitor usage trends and receive notifications about unusual patterns.

Customers whose water meters have been replaced with AMI water meters as part of the City's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) programme, can now link their meters to the City’s App and conveniently access their consumption information from their smartphones or tablets.

Benefits to customers

With the Smart Water feature, residents can now:

  • Track their water usage daily and view historical consumption data.
  • Monitor water usage patterns over time.
  • Receive alerts and notifications about unusual water usage patterns.
  • Download reports about your water consumption history in Excel or Pdf format.
  • Share access to the information with tenants or household members

'Cape Town’s Water Strategy is about transforming the way we manage, protect and use water so that our city is better prepared for an increasingly uncertain future. At a time when dam levels remind us that water security can never be taken for granted, we must continue to lead with both investment and innovation.

'Giving residents clearer, more immediate information about their own water use is an important part of becoming a more water-wise city. It enables households to identify unusual consumption earlier, make informed choices and work with the City to protect our shared water resources. This is the direction we must continue to take: using technology, responsible water use and long-term planning together to build a more resilient Cape Town,' said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Alderman Zahid Badroodien.

To use the Smart Water feature on the City’s App, customers must be registered for e-services. Customers can then opt-in to share their AMI meter data, generate a Smart Water Token and use the token with their AMI meter serial number to link the meter to the City’s App.

To protect customers' privacy, AMI water meter data will only be made available on the app once the account holder has given permission through the City's e-Services portal

Once the meter has been successfully linked, water consumption data may take 24 - 48 hours to become available on the City’s App.
